- Protection from Smuggling & Outbreaks:
Precise detection of illicit behavior within and outside of the perimeter
- Reliable Detection Despite Animals and Weather Conditions:
Filtering of weather influences (rain, snow, fog), filtering of animals
- Integration into the PKE Security Management System (SMS):
Through the KiwiVision® Connection Platform the KiwiVision® Intrusion Detector and the FLIR thermal cameras could easily be integrated into the PKE SMS (Security Management System)
- Barrier-Free Protection of the Perimeter & Premises:
No physical barriers had to be built in order to meet highest security standards
The Austrian Federal Ministry of Justice is an administrative authority of the Federation and ensures the population’s legal interests. The prison Sonnberg is one of 27 prisons and was originally built as a water castle in 1596. Together with the surrounding premises the estate was sold to the Republic of Austria by Habsburg Archduke Anton in 1955. Since then the estate has been used as a prison. Over the years, several additions of detention areas and workshop tracts were made, extending the capacity of formerly 90 to meanwhile 350 inmates.
The prison administration allows the inmates to move freely on the prison area. Due to the permanent danger of smuggling (drugs, weapons, means of communication), it was especially important to find technology which is able to efficiently prevent smuggling without attracting attention. In this context, an adjacent forest with a pond, which is only separated from the prison walls by a narrow meadow stripe, was a particular challenge. Persons who left certain tracks close to the prison or approached the walls had to be detected immediately and reliably. Here, one of the prison administration’s major concerns was to employ technology which does not require additional physical barriers while nevertheless meeting highest security requirements. Naturally, neither animals from the adjacent forest nor rain, snow or fog may cause false alarms.
General Security Risks:
- Smuggling & attempted smuggling
- Outbreaks & attempted outbreaks
- Manipulation of the security system
On the perimeter, the adjacent forest and pond challenged the automated video security system. Neither animals nor weather conditions or movements in the pond, which have not been caused by humans, may cause a false alarm. Solely KiwiSecurity’s video analysis met these high requirements and was able to convince the prison administration.
To protect the perimeter and the area within in the prison, the KiwiVision® Intrusion Detector is employed in combination with 24 FLIR thermal cameras distributed on the area. The detection area lies, depending on the position of the camera on the property, between 60 and 120 meters.
In the case of illicit behavior the KiwiVision® Intrusion Detector automatically triggers an alarm in the control center. Through the integration via the KiwiVision® Connection Platform with the PKE Electronics AG Security Management System deployed on site, in the case of alarm, the operator receives the triggering video sequence with an alarm image and additional information regarding place and time of the event as notification in the control room. Thus, in the case of emergency, guards, provided with valuable information regarding the event, can effectively intervene on the spot.
Regarding the protection of the perimeter, the prison Sonnberg solely trusts the detections by the KiwiVision® Intrusion Detector.
